At 82, Mary Berry is a formidable career woman, businesswoman and brand.
Until recently she was the face of BBC’s The Great British Bake Off, after a TV career which stretches back to the 1970s.
Mary has published more than 70 cookery books.
She has no plans for retiring.
“There isn’t any career I can recommend for you.”
At school Mary was not academically strong and was told by the head¬mistress, “There isn’t any career I can recommend for you.”
But she loved her domestic science classes with Miss Date, and went on to study catering and institutional management at the Bath College of Domestic Science and The Cordon Bleu in Paris.
During the 60s and 70s Mary was cookery editor of Housewife magazine, and Ideal Home and her publishing and TV careers followed.
“That’s What Happens When You Are Older.”
There is no place for facelifts or Botox for Mary.
“I’ve got wrinkles. That’s what happens when you are older. It doesn’t worry me.”
And pretension has never been her thing. Asked if she ever feels like making something just a bit cheffy, a Yotam Ottolenghi, for instance, she says, “Oh, don’t be daft.”
